More recently, while J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar were touring as supporting act for Eminem’s Rapture tour, the duo got interviewed by an Austrailian radio show The Bump Show. When asked about this collabo, Kendrick goes into further depth:

I was in Detroit. He brought me out to Detroit… So, he brought me to the studio. Told me to come to the studio to do the hook. So I go in and do the hook and he’s like ‘I like the hook.’ Boom, right? So, I’m like, ‘Alright, cool. I’m finna dip.’ He was like, ‘Think you could do a verse?’ ‘I was like “Hell yeah! I could do a verse. What you talking about 'can I do a verse?’ ” ‘ The thing with Em, what’s crazy to me, he kicks everybody out the studio. [Interviewer: It’s just you two?] It’s not even him. He gives your space. I took as him kicking everybody out to see if that’s really you writing them raps. That shit writing. When I’m the booth, and he’s walking in, then all done with the verse, I mean actually rapping it. He runs out like he don’t want to hear it. [J. Cole: Like he don’t want to to hear it. Yo, he’s a purist dawg! Rap purist. Yeah, it’s like a respect.]

Hot 97 and Power 105.1 are the two urban radios stations in New York City. Contrary to today, back in the 90’s, rappers were able to get radioplay without sacrificing their craft like the majority of mainstream rappers do today. Now, both networks don’t even introduce local rappers' records(which at Hot 97 did at one point) and play commercial songs.

Ebro Darden (program director of HOT 97) touches on the subject about radio and New York Hip Hop:
