The Revolutionary Guards – technically called The Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution – is a branch of Iran’s military, founded after the Iranian revolution on May 5, 1979. Whereas the regular military defends Iran’s borders and maintains internal order, according to the Iranian constitution, the Revolutionary Guard is intended to protect the country’s Islamic system.

In point of fact, it is extremely corrupt – hence Fara’s suspicion that they’d do bad things to anyone Iranian making money outside their purview. The Revolutionary Guard is described by one NGO as “like an amalgam of the Iranian CIA, Marines, Mafia and Fortune 500. Controlling hundreds of shell corporations, billions in assets, and an ideologically aligned army.”
