During an annotation session with Genius, Pusha T explained how the collaboration with Kanye came about:

I was going through girl issues and he was too. We were having a whole female conversation. And he was like, ‘You know what? I need this on a joint, on this particular record.’ We were just like annoyed and bitter and we were talking crazy. This is Kanye, it’s my first time working with him, I’m trying to make it polished and so on and so forth. He was like, ‘Listen, I need more douchebag. I just need more douchebag.’ That became the mission statement. He made me rewrite it like four times or more. Mind you, this is one of my first times working with him.

Kanye is a pessimist and perfectionist: he focuses on the negative as opposed to the positive, never feeling something is good enough – including this girl.

Recognizing he’s not perfect (his arrogance has always been present), Kanye’s aware that his obnoxiousness was never viewed as “menacing” until he snatched the microphone from America’s Sweetheart, Taylor Swift. While “Runaway” is a public apology for Kanye’s personality, the song further implies that he can’t change the way he is – the world will have to learn to live with Kanye, or run away.

This more backhanded toast is in contrast to a celebratory toast on “Last Call,” earlier in Ye’s career.

Pusha plays with the literal and figurative meaning of a price tag. Bags, blouses and bracelets are expensive: they literally come with a price tag. But taken metaphorically, all these finer things come with a price too, which are both his infidelity and the loss of self. In their relationship, Pusha buys so many expensive things for his girl that the possession may take the place of intimacy. Money changes people.

Also notice the alliteration:

Every bag, every blouse, every bracelet

The piano, the echoing voice in the background, the distortion on his singing, the vocoder solo: every single element of this track is spine-tingling, hauntingly beautiful. Combine that with Pusha’s verse and it becomes Greek tragedy rap: it takes the clichéd ideas of power, sex, money and removes all the glamour from them.

West has stated that the song serves as “a toast to the douchebags.” West weaves a tale through topics such as his relationship with Amber Rose, his arrogance, insecurity, and sorrow.

Pusha-T spoke about his emotional state during the writing process for “Runaway”:

I wrote ‘Runaway’ four times—and what he does not know to this day is that I was going through a relationship scandal in my life. So this man is asking me to write a song about a relationship and to say that I’m the biggest douchebag ever. He’s telling me, ‘Yo, you need to be more douchebag. We need more douchebag!’ I didn’t want to say to him, ‘Dog, I don’t know if I even have douchebag in me right now.’ I’ve been jammed up, and it’s hard for me to even tap into that part because I’m remorseful. [Laughs.]

Producer Pete Rock added:

[Kanye] played ‘Runaway'—and as soon as I heard the drums come in, I just started laughing. He used my drums from Mecca and the Soul Brother! I used these drums in an interlude before this record called ‘The Basement,’ and those drums come on before the song. I never heard anybody make a song the way he made it out of those drums. I thought that was genius.

Kanye premiered “Runaway” at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards—one year after his infamous “I'ma let you finish” interruption of Taylor Swift’s speech at the VMAs.

Continuing to describe the stereotype of the previous line, Pusha feels for his “gold diggers”. When girls who grew up under poor conditions have had a taste of all types of luxuries, they will never want to go back to their old life.

Kanye most likely was the inspiration for this bar. During the summer of 2009, when the creative process of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy took place, all G.O.O.D music artists were trapped with Ye in his mansion/studio in Hawaii for 2-3 months. ‘Ye blogged and tweeted about Versace furniture couple times during that period. Let’s just say he got Pusha hyped up about it.

After having multiple failed relationships (he was engaged 18 months to Alexis Phifer before the relationships came to an end, and dated Amber Rose for two years) – not to mention sending pictures of his dick to some girl, which appeared on the internet in 2010 – Kanye comes to the conclusion that he’s not good when it comes to love, and doesn’t really know why he always screws up.

He confirmed the veracity of the pic by referring to this line a in Hot 97 interview, saying “Have you heard the first line of ‘Runaway’? I only rap reality!”

Pusha already knows what option his girl is going to pick: she will “live with it”. He already knows she can’t live without the luxury Pusha is providing her, and if she leaves him she will be broke and go back to the knock-off brands they used to wear.

After laughing in a condescending way, he tells her to cancel the noise and shop-off her frustration at Neiman’s, and to just take another mai tai – an alcoholic cocktail she probably wouldn’t be able to afford herself.

Fun fact: this verse was written in Hawaii, so he probably didn’t choose the mai tai by random.

Actually, Pusha did choose the mai tai by random.

Pusha is admitting to whatever the girl is accusing him of – most likely cheating on her. But as he stated in the previous line, pussy is always on his mind. Hence, he can’t change the way he is. He gives the girl a choice: learn to live with my personality, or run away.

This lines up perfectly with the song’s theme:

Baby I got a plan
Run away fast as you can

Also of note, the line ‘Leave or live’ has an obscure assonance and alliterative effect. It has the two l’s, a vowel sound and a common consonant sound ‘v’ after.
