Historically, gout has been known as the disease of kings or rich men (which is much more regal sounding than that four-letter cacophony)

These dukes, counts, and lords were able to eat more red meat and drink more booze than their feudal neighbors and as such became afflicted. Recent diet changes in the population at large due to increased socioeconomic status have led to higher rates of gout occurring.

Kanye appears as a fictionalized version of himself (though not made-up enough to not wear shutter shades). The similarities in name are reminiscent of a line off of “Diamonds from Sierra Leone”:

It’s Kanye but some of plaques, they still say Kayne

#Wait, hold up Jesus

Detractors often cite this as a crushing blow to the foundation of Christianity (Jesus himself promoting violence?) but instead the problem is one of context, interpretation, and perhaps translation

In Luke 12:51, we have

Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division

and many posit that Jesus is referring to ideological divison, in that his teachings were novel and not concurrent with the status quo

However, the Book of Columba, an illuminated Gospel, uses the Latin gaudium (joy) instead of gladium (sword) which leaves us with the much more benevolent

Think not that I am come to send peace on Earth: I came not to send peace, but joy

A very subtle change takes place in this last verse, but it serves to seal off the song well. A shift from past tense to future (he had fucked, but now he will fuck) combined with the mention of choices and fate lets us know our character will attempt to redeem himself through his actions.

Mumford & Sons are very conservative with their use of swear words: the only profane song other than this one is Sigh No More’s “Little Lion Man” (which ironically happened to flood radios everywhere)

The use of “fuck” here – and there – is meant to draw out emotion incredibly effectively, especially when contrasted with the soft, folk nature of the band and some of their songs. The word choice truly conveys disappointment, resentment, anger, and exasperation.
