Nas reiterates

Dear Young Warriors fighting the wrong war

There are many wars being fought today, wars in middle-eastern countries and the wars that hit home such as the war on drugs. There are also small factions of civil wars which is what Nas is talking about. The Derrion Albert case was publicized not only because of the video but because it was fought by people fighting its own people. Nas can relate to it, being from Brookyln and raised that way.

One example is in the song Shoot ‘Em Up, Nas talked about the song in correlation with this letter saying it was what was real and it was apart of his life. He’s implying, everyone feels this way one way or another.

Adam and Eve according to the Bible and other religious texts were the first man and women on the earth, created by God.

In the Book of Genesis there is a story about Eve being tempted by Satan in the form of a snake to take an apple from a tree that was forbidden by God. Eve took the apple and her and Adam ate out of it, turning them into the first sinners as well.

Winzy is screwed; either way.

If Winzy doesn’t go and work for Agrippa he no longer will have money to show that he is worthy of Bertha and then he and Bertha can no longer marry.

If Winzy does go and work for Agrippa then he wont have time to spend with Bertha and then it really isn’t much of a relationship at all

Winzy is still at a worrying state although things are getting better.

I still continued my stolen interviews with Bertha, and Hope dawned on me – Hope – but not perfect joy: for Bertha fancied that love and security were enemies, and her pleasure was to divide them in my bosom.

Winzy and Bertha have an unusual relationship; Bertha loves to torment Winzy and Winzy loves her regardless. Seeing as how they grew up as childhood friends who decided to marry one day- this isn’t all that unusual actually.

Though true of heart, she was something of a coquette in manner; I was jealous as a Turk.

True at heart; Bertha is a good women despite tormenting Winzy. She doesn’t realize it. A coquette is another word for a flirt, unknowingly she would flirt with other men or appear to be doing so and Winzy got envious as a result.

She slighted me in a thousand ways, yet would never acknowledge herself to be in the wrong. She would drive me mad with anger, and then force me to beg her pardon.

She made Winzy irritated, never accepted her doing any wrong, she’d get mad at Winzy and then feel sorry and ask for forgiveness.

Sometimes she fancied that I was not sufficiently submissive, and then she had some story of a rival, favoured by her protectress. She was surrounded by silk-clad youths – the rich and gay. What chance had the sad-robed scholar of Cornelius compared with these?

One of the things Bertha would tell him was about the other men who want her hand in marriage, she would threaten Winzy in this way to get her way. What chance does Winzy have?

Bertha’s personality shows out- she says

You pretend to love

Implying that Winzy doesn’t really love her, because if he did then he would magically already be rich*…

and you fear to face the Devil for my sake!

Referencing Agrippa’s supposed black magic. Bertha ultimately thinks Winzy is mocking her with the idea that they could actually marry, although he really isn’t.

Winzy is talking about the offer from Agrippa, to become his apprentice in return for some gold. Bertha comes from a rich family and the society that they live in is built on a caste system based on how rich/poor you are, Bertha and Winzy can’t marry unless Bertha turns poor or Winzy gets money. Winzy originally rejects the offer because of his good morals and refuses but now he decides that he must- because his love for Bertha exceeds his ethics.

Winzy foolishly seals his fate
