Some claim this is based on a true story, that big city dealer(s) actually did this sort of thing. If you know of articles that can back this up, please link to them.

Either way—it’s kind of a clever plan, actually! The advantages are:

  1. Much lower police presence—less chance of getting caught.
  2. LESS dope on the streets—less competition from other dealers.
  3. LOWER QUALITY dope on the strees—theirs is better by comparison.
  4. Nobody knows them there—no drama with other dealers.

…In the beginning, anyway.

It was definitely the way to ‘expand’ back then. Dealers from larger cities would travel to other cities/States and smaller towns where any local competition there wasn’t taken seriously. Coming from a large city where drama is constant, you’re not really worried about conflict with rural dealers that you consider to be ‘low lifes’ anyway.

This is/was common in the drug game, especially with dealers that come from bigger cities. Sell out of state and make more of a profit. This is also how Bloods and Crips spread across the country.
