  • “You have been saved.” Salvation is a completed action that has a present effect. In his earlier letters Paul usually refers to salvation either as a future event (Romans 5:9-10) or as a present process (1 Corinthians 1:18; 2 Corinthians 2:15). One exception is Romans 8:24, where Paul puts salvation in the past, but qualifies it as needing completion at Christ’s return: “in this hope we were saved.”

  • “And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” This parenthesis is thought by many to refer to the whole complex of salvation by grace through faith as a gift of God. Others, however, take “this” as referring specifically to “faith.” Sinners are dependent on God’s gracious gift for their believing response to Christ from the moment of conversion. Paul makes explicit here what is implicit elsewhere in the New Testament about the ultimate source of saving faith (Acts 13:48; Philippians 1:29).

The Great Commission

  • “Go ye therefore.” The Great Commission is given on Christ’s authority. Since Christ’s dominion is universal, the gospel must go to the whole world. This commandment is the primary reason for evangelism and missions.

  • “nations.” The same Greek word often translated “Gentiles.” The great promise that in Abraham all the nations would be blessed (Genesis 12:3) is ready to be fulfilled.

  • “baptizing them.” Those who become disciples are baptized in (literally “into”) the triune name. There is one name (not “names”), and one baptism; Father, Son, and Spirit are one God. Disciples are baptized “in” this name because they belong to God, having been brought into the new covenant that expresses the will of the triune God.

The Christian’s mind-set is to be determined and reshaped by knowledge of the gospel, by the power of the Spirit, and by the concerns of the age to come (Romans 8:5–9; Romans 13:11–14), rather than by the passing fashion of this age (2 Corinthians 4:18; 1 John 2:17).

Only by such sanctifying renewal is the Christian made sufficiently sensitive to “discern” the behavior that is God’s will in each situation.

“And we know” is in reference to the Christian assessment that the present in the light of their assurance about the future. As true Israelites, in whom the first and great commandment is fulfilled (Matthew 22:37-38), their love for God is evoked by knowledge of His love for him (Romans 5:5–8).

The use of “called” here means that they were simply brought to faith.

“According to his purpose” is in reference to the purpose of God, which guarantees “good” for His people. For them this is not necessarily ease and quiet, but being like Christ. God’s providence rules in such a way as to ensure everything that happens to Christians is working for their ultimate good. This echoes God’s revelation of His benevolent purpose in Jeremiah 29:11.
