The Pentateuch refers to the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). For the most part, both Jewish and Christian tradition credit Moses with primary authorship of the Pentateuch.

These five books form the theological foundation of the Bible. The word pentateuch means “five vessels,” “five containers,” or “five-volumed book.” In Hebrew the Pentateuch is referred to as the Torah, meaning “the law” or “instruction.” Another name for the Pentateuch is “the five books of Moses.”

The books of the Pentateuch introduce Bible readers to God’s divine purposes and plans, and explain how sin entered the world. In the Pentateuch we also see God’s response to sin, his relationship with mankind, and insights into his character and nature.

Critics might object to Canaan being punished for his father’s crime.

This is against the moral intuition of most Christians too. For example, one commentator believes it is likely that Canaan saw his grandfather first, and told his father.

But blesses and curses on people’s descendants are a common theme in the Bible. Consider that the blessings on the son’s of Noah earlier were applied to their descendants too. Or the broader fact that the rest of humanity is punished for the sin of Adam. It seems that many Christians are forced to accept this method of justice as the nature of God, even if it isn’t how we do things in our own laws.

Ham’s descendants include, in addition to the Canaanites, the names of Israel’s most dreaded enemies: Egypt, Philistia, Assyria, and Babylon. Bible critics might interpret this fact as a way of smearing Israel’s enemies.

Just as Adam, the original head of the human race, sinned through eating (Genesis 3:6), so Noah, the head of the human race after the Flood, sinned through drinking. The striking parallels between Adam and Noah, and the contrast between saintly Noah before the Flood (Genesis 6:8-9) and the drunken sinner after it, direct the reader to God, not man, for salvation.

Alternatively, this may have been his first experience with wine and was unaware of the effects. We don’t know if God warned him against drunkenness, as the Bible does later on.

Jesus is called “Savior” only twice in the four Gospels. “Christ” means “Messiah,” while “Lord” is regularly used in the Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) for God’s own name, conventionally translated with small capitals (“Lord”).

Note: The most outstanding terms are used for the new Baby.

Animals to be used for the temple sacrifices were kept in the open, even in winter. The presence of shepherds outdoors does not prove that Jesus was born in a warm time of year.

Shepherds were a despised class because their work prevented them from keeping the ceremonial law, and as they moved about the country it was common for them to be regarded as thieves. They were considered unreliable and were not allowed to give evidence in the courts.

Jesus’s association with shepherds, even at birth, is symbolic of his close relationship with and advocation of the poor and lowly
