A line of poetry with punctuation at its end.

Example:

Last night, when the moon
slipped into my attic room
as an oblong of light,
I sensed she’d come to commiserate.

As seen here, poets may alterante end-stopped lines with non-end-stopped lines to create a varied rhythm to fit the meaning they wish to convey.

Example

In Robert Browning’s poem “My Last Duchess,” the lines break after the word “wall” and “call.”

There’s my last duchess painted on the wall
Looking as if she were alive. I call
That piece a wonder now.

A group of stressed and unstressed syllables; a unit of meter. A line of one foot is a monometer, 2 feet is a dimeter, and so on – trimeter (3), tetrameter (4), pentameter (5), hexameter (6)

The repetition of elements having to do with syntax, sound, and stress, among other things, close enough together that one notices the effect. More general than meter.

A foot having one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable, as in the word “tender.”

Trochaic verse tends to have a march-like quality. Here’s how it sounds in Auden’s “The Fall of Rome”:

But the muscle-bound Marines
Mutiny for food and pay.

A foot consisting of one unstressed syllable followed by one stressed syllable, as in the word “beyond."
