Their objection was not to the rebuilding itself, but to the timing of it. The objections may have been economic, because their land was in trouble (Haggai 1:11), or religious, because according to Ezekiel 37:24–27 the Messiah would rebuild the temple, or because according to Jeremiah 25:11–14, the nation must serve a foreign king seventy years.

The original temple was destroyed in 586 B.C., and they may have falsely reasoned that they should not start building the new temple until 516 B.C. Such excuses showed that they were not pursuing God’s kingdom and righteousness.

The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a public work relief program that operated from 1933 to 1943 in the United States for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families, ages 18 – 28. A part of the New Deal of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, it provided unskilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands owned by federal, state and local governments.

The Iron Curtain symbolized the ideological conflict and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991. On either side of the Iron Curtain, states developed their own international economic and military alliances:

• Member countries of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance and the Warsaw Pact, with the Soviet Union as the leading country.
• Member countries of the European Community and of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and associated countries with the United States as the leading country.

Latin for “I am a citizen of Rome” or “I am a Roman citizen.” Safety and due process under Roman law were said to be guaranteed to citizens living and traveling throughout the Roman Empire upon proclaiming this phrase.

A collection of 150 psalms (a sacred song or hymn), whose Hebrew name is “The Book of Praise.” Authors of individual psalms include David, Solomon, Moses, Asaph, and others who are anonymous.

The variety and unity of Psalms have given this book a unique place in the devotional life of the individual and the Church. Almost every aspect of man’s relation to God is depicted in these poems: simple trust, the sense of sin, appeals to a higher power in time of trouble, and the conviction that the world is in the hands of a loving God.

Recitation of the entire Book of Psalms, of individual psalms or of selections from the book have been, since its composition, popular in liturgy and in private devotional life, in all religions and traditions who hold the book in esteem.

Because of its liturgical and devotional presence, this book held a special place within the public eye. Its regular recitation made it perhaps the book of the Bible best known by the general populace. It is referenced in poetry and literature throughout the ages by far and away more than any other book, and it generated more homiletic commentary than any other book (likely because many public sermons revolved around quotes from this book, as is still common today.)
