A reference to the No Child Left Behind Act, which pushes standards-based education reform based on the premise that setting high standards and establishing measurable goals can improve individual outcomes in education.

The Act expanded the federal role in public education through annual testing, annual academic progress, report cards, teacher qualifications, and funding changes.

Initially sponsored by Ted Kennedy, the bill passed the U.S. Congress with bipartisan support, was signed by President Bush, and was enacted January 8th of 2002.

Interestingly enough, “Texas-sized” is considered a unit of measurement, albeit an unusual one. The expression itself can be used in two ways: to describe something that is approximately the size of the state of Texas, or to describe something (usually but not always originating from Texas) that is large compared to other objects of its type.

While the Bible strictly forbids eating things like shellfish, pork, and rabbits, this verse states that locusts are perfect for snackin' on.

You can’t just eat any bugs, however.

Leviticus strictly condemns anything that creeps, swarms or has four legs and wings as off limits (see the verse immediately following this one). Yet certain sources of crunchy protein, like locusts, crickets and grasshoppers, are just fine.

Why locusts?

Some theories state that due to the evasive nature of locusts (who often came in waves, devoured crops, and caused famines), they were often the only thing poor Israelites had to eat. Therefore, if the Bible didn’t allow for their consumption, many of its followers would starve to death, which wouldn’t fare well for the growth of the religion.

God’s heavenly attendants escort Elijah to heaven “by a whirlwind.” Fire appears several times in Elijah’s ministry as a sign of God’s all-consuming power.

This verse (along with Kings 6:17) inspired the William Blake line, “Bring me my chariot of fire.” That in turn inspired the title of the 1981 Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire (can you hear the theme in your head already?):
