“Life is like a chess game” is one of the many metaphors to describe how in life, one has to make decisions constantly, and each move decides one’s fate.

King and pawns are pieces on the board, but can represent the strongest and the weakest, respectively. Wale could be comparing a few things; examples being: King being the power of wealth and the pawn being in poverty or a peasant and/or the King being the leader and the pawn being a follower (something he hit on not too long ago)

Ex.“How to play chess” scene from The Wire.

Sidenote: However, a king and a pawn, both can only move one space (square) at a time. Make wise decisions. Also if a pawn makes it to the other side of the board (eight rank), it can be promoted to king, queen, rook, or bishop.

Lynn mentioned she use the word “ghost” throughout the album, as a metaphor for depression in an interview with Radio.com:

The actual things behind the stories and behind the lyrics had a lot to do with…I hate saying depression, but there was a really rough patch in my head and really difficult time and I didn’t know why…A lot of the ghosts that appeared in the record is a metaphor for that depression at that time in my head and all the things going on in it. It’s mainly about that, and there’s little things here and there about certain people.

“Ghosts” is about a couple struggling to keep their relationship alive due to “ghosts” that come out at night. There is a popular belief that evil spirits have the ability to make families into enemies when they stay in a house for too long. The “ghosts” can also be a metaphor for the bad dreams or rumors that cause the couple to fight.

Continuation of the previous line about Diddy, the founder and CEO of Bad Boy Records/ Entertaiment.

He makes clever juxtaposition of bad and good. If a bad boy – problem starter – is around, it’s likely their victim will not have the best of luck. Ab wishes you the best even though he knows you’re going to receive the worst.

There are points at which a party will die down for a little bit – “nothing’s poppin'

When she is bored she pops a Zanny bar (Xanax) to make things exciting. She doesn’t hesitate to overload her supply when she’s out. This has a sad side to it, as it insinuates she’s never happy.

Notice the “laying low” to oppose the “go up” in the previous line. Probably, not on purpose, but it adds contradiction to the belief that drugs are the only things that can make one happy. He plays on these opposing natures in again in the third verse:

That’s why she want to get high because she’s feeling low

Soulo makes a joke about burying (or killing) someone underground “six feet” – the standard grave depth.

One person has two feet, so three people have six. Teaching mathematics while rhyming, always a plus. This also concludes that he can kill multiple rappers at a time.

Soulo often frequents third-eye references, which is why “three” is distorted and Wale responds with “deep.” Soul’s examples of third eye references: “Pineal Gland,” “Nothing New,” “Terrorist Threats.”
