Speaking in tongues, or “Glossolalia” is the vocalizing of speech-like syllables, often as part of religious practice.

The significance of glossolalia has varied with time and place, with some considering it a part of a sacred language while others consider it the language of demons.

The phrase “hem-de-lay-la” refers to the Arabic phrase الحمدلله (“Al-ḥamdu lillāh”), which means “Thanks and Praise to God”. It’s got a common use in Islam

He also uses that phrase in “Without me,” “Under the Influence,” “Square Dance,” and “Bagpipes from Baghdad.”

He tried possibly sleeping the overdose off, cup still in hand (a very common occurrence among people overdosing with no one around), although not always the case, there’s the possibility of losing consciousness. from lack of oxygen

The fact that he is literally holding the thing that kills him as he dies is the most depressing part of the song. He sits down to die, but couldn’t let go of the drink that is killing him.

With codeine addiction becoming more of a commonplace for him he contrasts the effects of codeine to that of Kick Drum, a type of bass drum with a low and quickly resonating sound. This “hit” was much harder and had longer lasting effects

In the previous line, Macklemore states that the syrup was just as addictive as the “base” (amphetamines… and also the homophone for “bass”).

The drum beat starts to include a bass (kick) drum (as well as a snare) immediately after this line too to tie in with the lyrics.

Most likely a reference to Luniz’s famous song “I Got 5 On It”, which is all about smoking weed. “I got 5 on it” is a common phrase used by weed smokers that ascertains, “I will put in $5 to pay for some of that marijuana/indo/whatever is about to be passed around.” If not, ya get nada.

This track is a remix of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”, but this line is an homage to Em’s other 8 Mile track “Run Rabbit Run”

If I have half a chance I grab it, rabbit run

He’s playing on the phrase “stand against” if you literally had half a stance you’d be sitting down. Metaphorically you’re doomed (have no chance) trying to battle Lupe, even if you wanted to try, you couldn’t muscle enough energy and attitude to gain the urge to confront him.
