a continuation on the last line’s idea. it’s to say that i will keep working until everyone is gone.

this is the idea that you are never finished working and paying dues. as soon as you get comfortable someone will over take you. no one has ever “proved” themselves in my eyes because they might fuck up tomorrow.

rappers get gassed up. they believe their own hype. most people don’t realize that these blogs and magazines don’t cover people because they are necessarily the best at what they do. they cover people because they have good PR. you pay someone to reach out to media outlets and post your stuff. you are feeding them your hype. oftentimes the blurbs on blog posts and online magazines will be identical, because the writers are too lazy to reword what the PR person sent to them.

this is a chopped up vocal sample from a verse i had done a few months prior on a project called “I ruined these song for you too.” it was over a phantogram song called “when i’m small.” “Fool, you can’t reinvent truth, I’d rather die the worst me than live to be the best you.” for some reason this line really resonated with people. when i wrote it, it seemed like it had to be too good to be true, like i must’ve heard it somewhere before, but apparently not. i have had a few people send me pictures of tattoos of that line and that is extremely humbling and appreciated.

fans seem to have a misconception that if you have a record out, your life is awesome…you are caked up, living fat, and doing whatever you want. truth be told, most independent artists hold down regular jobs or live very meagerly.

The last line is about trying to stay carefree about problems and not letting stress kill you. it was originally “when it all falls down i just let it fall man”…but Nocando convinced me after some coaxing to change it to “all land” and he was correct in the long run.

at the time i would jot down four bar sections of a rhyme on a yellow sticky note pad. i could only fit about four bars on each piece because i have sloppy handwriting. i had sticky notes posted everywhere around my desk and would have to organize them into sense. Guinness is my beer of choice when i’m out and about.

At the time I wrote this i had begun to work with a company that I no longer associate myself with. i played many rolls there: brand manager, producer, photographer, booker, A&R for their artists, songwriter, etc etc. I began to realize i was doing things i didn’t know i could do and felt it was a renaissance period of my life. renaissance man being someone who’s expertise spans many different areas.

i worked at this job for three years, i thought it was interesting how it tied in to how i started the song with 3 and 13, became a numeric theme. i literally did all the work of the job within the first two hours of the day and spent the rest of the time writing large chunks of “girls like me” or burning CDs and making cd covers for various CDR projects i was putting out. it was too comfortable of a gig, and i’m glad they downsized.

many people consider pursuing a rap career to be a pipe dream. i large part of me thinks that too. but now that i have more spare time, i have more time to work on my craft.
