This line is a reference to the Dr. Seuss' children’s book Green Eggs and Ham, where “Sam-I-Am” bothers some unnamed character to try Green Eggs and Ham, who in turn declines, claiming to dislike it. By the end, he tries it and enjoys it.

Eggs and Ham are pretty high in cholesterol, though.

This guy in a relationship thought really big of himself and wanted to show how he was so amazing. To prevail means to dominate. He want’s to show his girlfriend he had power, to look cool in his relationship.

Q-Tip then describes an anecdote of a time him and his cousin saw this exact scenario play out in public. A man lightly bumped into a couple after they had been walking towards each other and instead of brushing it off like he should’ve, the boyfriend showed off his fury in the attempt of some botched machismo. In the end, he just got his ass and his pride kicked.

The message is clear, acting all tough to boost your ego (especially when you aren’t really all that) is only really gonna make you look like a fool.

Q-Tip just explained three stories in this song, all of them in which someone ends up fitting the definition of a fool. Sometimes you can become a fool because life can be hard, and you can’t be controlled all the time.

Also a reference to the TV show Naked City, which ended each episode with the narrator saying “There are eight million stories in the naked city. This has been one of them.”

The fool physically abuses his girlfriend, no matter if people are around to see him do it or not. The man has apparently gotten so comfortable abusing his lady that he was going to do it in the presence of Q-Tip, almost causing Tip to give the abuser a taste of his own medicine while questioning why the lady would put up with this abusive behavior.

If you think you’re good enough to step to him, attempt it; if not, let him rock the mic uninterrupted.

This line was sampled on the chorus of Jay-Z’s song “Bring it On” on Reasonable Doubt.

Fat Joe spoke with Complex in 2011 and said the following about this line being sampled in “Bring It On”:

[Primo sampled my line, ‘Bring it on if you think you can hang,’ on Jay-Z’s album]. I saw Jay-Z, and he was like, ‘Yo man, we’re gonna send you some publishing. We used your voice on this [song].’ That shit was cool. Reasonable Doubt is a classic album. That whole album was crazy. To have my voice on there was dope.”
