A reference to an old fundraising adage (cited in print as early as 1985), whose usual formulation is:

“If you want money, ask for advice.”

The idea is that if you ask for money point-blank, you’ll turn the investor off; but if you ask them for advice, i.e., if you flatter them, get them talking about themselves, get them thinking about your venture, etc., they may loosen up and fund you.
