Vapors are usually bad in Milton, no matter how “exhilarating”, “bland”, or both (?). He believed he was blinded by digestive vapors that rose from his stomach to behind his eyes, and foul mists are always rising from Hell in Paradise Lost

This isn’t really a compliment; having a refined palate is actually a form of gluttony, since it signals just as unhealthy and immoral a preoccupation with food as overeating.

Some scholars argue that Milton, obsessed with his abstemious eating habits, believed that the original sin was gluttony.

He doesn’t mean this in a good way. Milton links adventurousness to the character Sin after the Fall in Book X when Sin proposes to Death that they build a bridge between hell and earth. Sin calls that bridge-building “Adventrous work” (X.255).

Notice how Eve’s motivation for sharing the fruit with Adam was half love, half selfish fear (she didn’t want to die alone and be replaced), while Adam is all about the love

Also, Eve has been compared to a flower, but those days are over now, just like the garland that now lay dead at his feet.

Much has been made of the sonic similarity of Eve/evil, especially by mean men who hate women and want to prove they’re inherently bad

But more interesting is the double mention of bad timing (rash hand in evil hour), implying that if Eve had just taken a deep breath and taken a walk around the block or made herself a nice hot cup of herbal tea, this fatal binge would have been avoided.

Eat=ate: Milton usually is about stretching things ooooouuuut (the original Genesis story of Adam and Eve is just a few sentences; Paradise Lost is..long), but here he contracts the Fall of Man into four short words.

Note the menacing monosyllabic

This is known as an acceleration, or compression. It means that an event in the story is described in fewer words, thus happens faster from the reader’s point of view, then the rest. It is generally used to create a feeling of stress, and setting up climaxes.
