We wrote a whole blog post on the unresolved debate, only to find out (via a source close to Jay-Z) that “Lulu” is in fact Jay-Z’s mother

Also, “reign/rain” “son shine/sunshine” are examples of wordplay. That wordplay is also reminiscent of some previous Jigga lines on Rihanna’s hit song, “Umbrella” in which Jay was talking about himself as “Rainman” and about Rihanna as miss “Sunshine”.
How is his mother LuLu? Her name’s Gloria Carter.
I think someone needs to ask Jay-Z personally whether this is
a) Lulu’s son shine – a reference to his mother
b) Lulu’s son shine – a reference to pain in full
c) knew no sunshine – a reference to stars and weather.
Also it’d help to have the blog linked where it confirms Lulu is his mother. Because otherwise the annotation seems purely speculative.
This is COMPLETELY wrong. He says, “My reign knew no sunshine” because he’s always been a bright shining star. Use context clues. The next line says, “Been a star since I was ducking one time.” Can’t see the stars when it’s daylight, so he’s saying his reign has been an endless night of stars with him the brightest of them all.
He’s talking about Lulu from Paid in Full. Thinking about it metaphorically. Ace was like Lulu’s son who the game of drug dealer was passed on. No one could’ve imagined how a kid who worked in a dry cleaner would eventually become the king drug dealer. In those days a drug dealer was a star that was always shining.
