Red Wine here has 2 meanings:

  1. Reinforcing the Italian-American/Paisano theme, as red wine is a staple of Italian meals. “Last call” is a phrase commonly associated with the bar scene, and is the final warning that alcohol will soon stop being served.
  2. Red wine is used in the Christian sacrament of communion to represent the blood of Jesus, which is itself a representation of the forgiveness of sins, which is freely given to those who ask. However, we may be getting close to the “last days”, at which point it would be too late to receive the “wine”.

Dre spends lots of time holed away writing raps, but he does it to glorify God. The biblical concept of “favor” typically involves a righteous person being singled out by God and given a special role in the course of history. For example Noah and Jesus:

So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. – Genesis 6:7-8

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. – Luke 2:52

Continuing the house metaphor, and building on it by noting that we’re still “under construction” as we continue to grow as we walk through life with Jesus (who was a carpenter by trade).

The opening lines introduce the concept of the song: our bodies as houses which Jesus inhabits once we believe in Him. The price that is referenced is Jesus' crucifixion.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

B. Coop brings the realness. The judge and jury could either be:

  1. God – your sins will catch up to you one way or another, and it can be painful indeed.

  2. The listening public – ideally, heads will identify with MCs that truthfully represent what’s inside of them. Superficial MCs may have a run of fame, but once the novelty wears off, they tend to fall hard. Exhibit A:

There’s also a shout out to Dirty Rice, the producer of this track and longtime B. Cooper collaborator and friend.
