Released in 1960 and written by Willie Dixon, Spoonful has been covered by several artists, from Etta James to Cream to the songwriter Willie Dixon himself. The song has been featured on several “best of” lists, including a spot on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock, and induction into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2010.

The song’s author, Willie Dixon, has made it clear this is not about drugs. In his autobiography “I Am The Blues” he says “People who think ‘Spoonful’ was about heroin are mostly people with heroin ideas.”

When Howlin' Wolf performed it on stage, he often simulated self love and/or rubbed his groin area with a large wooden spoon.
