She’s saying good riddance, and realizes that it’s going to be easier now with less people to feed in the house, since he wasn’t contributing anything anyway. This attitude is a stark contrast to the first verse, where she let him move in even though she knew better. She’s becoming more self-reliant as she goes through her various trials.

This is a historical proverb representing the effect that a small event can have, like the butterfly effect. The proverb is about a city that was sieged by invaders. In some versions, the rider in line three is carrying an important message that never makes it through, which is why the battle is lost. In this version the rider is a soldier who was supposed to protect the city.

This is a reference to the tale of Hansel and Gretel, who left a trail of breadcrumbs in the woods so they could find their way back home. He’s leaving this trail so that when he does get lost on his way through life, he can find the correct path again.

It’s also possible that the bread is a reference to the sacrament of Holy Communion, which involves bread as a representation of the body of Christ. He’s using the sacraments as a means to keep on the right path. This idea is also reinforced by Jesus own words descibing himself as “the bread of life” in John 6:32-35.

This line sums of the song quite well in that before you decide to pursue your fictitious dreams, remember that you can always be killed and your story will never be told. ie: being marooned like our pirate in the song has been.

In this case, “dead men tell no tales” may also serve as a bit of a clue to the ending of the story. The pirate in this tale may have survived the ordeal, otherwise the story would never have been passed on (ie. if he were dead, he couldn’t tell the tale).
