Q wants everyone who pretends to like him just to leech off him and his money to know one thing: you’re wrong. They want the benefits without the struggle, so Q has to ask the same question Kendrick did in “King Kunta”:

Bitch, where you when I was walkin'?

Playing off the phrase “the pen is mightier than the sword”, God tells Mack that he’s capable of writing sharp rhymes and spit true aggression over every beat he encounters.

It’s apparent that Mack has followed through with God’s words, as he compares his keen rapping ability to that of how well he can fuck a girl, nothing but prestigious and unsurpassable.

Macklemore feels like such a big shot with his rebellious spray paint attitude, that his work does all the talking for him, Mack’s paintings showing up spastically like bippity-boppity-bo. He used to feel like a nobody of the city, but unleashing his cans of paint has elevated him to a new found confidence.

You can also see how Macklemore is drawing a double meaning as these lines work into his current rise to success. After the success of The Heist, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis quickly gained traction and rose form the underground.

Snoop and Short take the time away from their usual subject matter to give us a track focusing on being yourself. If they had given up in their darkest times, the probability of them making it to their current position would have been quite unlikely. They both advise to keep pursuing your dream and fight for what you believe in.

Unlike other diss records, Budden wants to clear the air that not an ounce of this track is to get people talking about him more. Rather, he feels inclined to address the situation and stand up for himself, unlike Drake’s motivations, which Budden feels are over-emotional and based off of his criticism of Views.

A “locc” is a high-ranking member of the Crip gang. Q claims ownership to that role, noting how the privileges of the position allow him to manipulate his way around the hood.

In this case, the snitch that was supposed to show up in court against him went missing. Q was able to rid of him and the charges without getting his hands dirty because of the respect he demands from his fellow Crips. Q warns us against testing him in his domain.

The mentality for many living in the hood is to get what you can by any means. In this case, Traffic’s enemy knew he was on the hip-hop grind, attempted to rob him on the streets, and suffering the consequences.

Traffic claims these kinds of altercations occur all too often, as people’s perceptions of him altered upon him making money.

Macklemore reminisces of when he was on the cover of Source Magazine as part of their “man of the year” issue. To him back in the day, this was as great of an accomplish as it would be to be published in a Vanity Fair article (this meaning alot considering he had covered Rolling Stone just a little while before).

Also note this building off the hook, meaning these tabloid accomplishments were only accomplished by his hard work.
