This couplet surely came up at “Regarding Michael Jackson: Performing Racial, Gender, and Sexual Difference Center Stage,” an academic conference held on the Yale campus from September 23-24, 2004. People there talked about this line for, like, months.

Kanye can relate two girls of different races to Michael Jackson be because he was once black before his vitiligo came into effect. It is speculated that Michael used skin bleaching creams to make his skin lighter, however, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey he stated that he only uses makeup to cover up the blotches on his skin.

Alternately, it could go slightly deeper in that she has an unattractive friend with a light complexion who reminds him of the late Michael Jackson, and she also has another unattractive friend with a darker complexion which also reminds him of Michael Jackson, but the younger, Pre-vitiligo diagnosed Michael Jackson.

In a 2013 New York Times interview, West cited writing this very line as the moment he knew he was going to be a big star.

Teddy Pendergrass is a legend of Seventies Philly soul best known for his work with Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (he sang lead on “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”). T-Pain revisits this Teddy Pendergrass joke in his verse on R. Kelly’s 2007 remix of Bow Wow’s “I'ma Flirt” (“I'ma flirt whether I’m in or out of town/That’s why they call me Teddy Bend-her-ass down”). Pendergrass was also known as TP, which might have been the basis for the comparison.

He’s paid, has a good flow, a platinum AMEX, and will still knock that ass out if he needs to.

“Platinum plus” may also refer to his album and record sales. When this track was released on July 11, 1997, Biggie’s first album, Ready to Die, had been certified double platinum, denoting more than 2,000,000 sales, and two of his singles had been certified platinum, denoting 1,000,000 sales: Warning on May 23, 1995, and Hypnotize on June 11, 1997, although the latter was after this track was recorded as Biggie had died in March of that year. (See RIAA’s Gold and Platinum Program, the official source, for all of these figures).

Minus the decorative “-izzles”, the line is easier to follow:

I got the dough, got the flow down pat
Platinum plus like that
Dangerous on tracks
Leave your ass flat

But not as good, huh?

Mase’s debut album was Harlem World

Double up is a gambling strategy, which ties into the next line about laying a bet down. He is telling his doubter to double their bet against him, so he will win twice as much money since he can’t be stopped.

Double Up would also be the name of his second album. If you didn’t like the first album or thought it was a fluke, wait til you hear the new one.
