Dostoevsky’s work with inner monologue, particularly with Raskilnikov, was innovative for his time and provides an intensely personal relationship between character-reader. Plus, we get to see how cray-cray Raskilnikov really is.
this isn’t just a way to show readers if he’s “crazy”, but it also emphasises his dependence on his inner self; listening to himself internally establishes his motive entirely. One could also infer that this is a sign of mental degradation; “listening to the voices in your head”.
