Ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus believed that the fundamental nature of the universe was change, as found in his maxim that nobody steps in the same river twice. In the philosophy of Divers, however, the river of time is one that flows cyclically, one that we eventually stand in the same again.

These lines mark a differing perspective in Newsom’s philosophy of time than in previous works. On Ys she claimed life was “thundering blissful towards death,” suggesting a finite end. Here, on an album concerned with time-travel and philosophical concepts such as eternal return, she focuses on time as both the great equalizer (“nullifying, defeating, negating”) and that which provides the greatest opportunity (“repeating”).

If, as she sings in the line before, time does move both ways, then it affirms the existence of both the A-series (present) B-series (past) of time proposed by philosopher John M. E. McTaggart in his influential paper “The Unreality of Time.”

Richie Quake is an R&B artist from Brooklyn, New York. His music has been featured on the well-known blog Pigeons & Planes and Vice and has accrued tens of thousands of plays on his Soundcloud.

Quake’s first release was the 2013 genre-traversing album Visions, and he has followed it up with an R&B sound indebted to the pitched-down style of Soundcloud vocals as well as classic lyrical tropes of the genre. 2015 saw his release In Love N' Memory as an expansion of this sound.

2016 has been a year of pop-leaning singles, from “Sweettalk” to “Hesitate,” but the year kicked off with the more subdued “Irresistible (Ice Cold).” He closed out the year with a premiere in The Fader of the dark R&B song “Try.”

Deep In The Iris is the third album by Canadian electronic pop band Braids. The album’s title comes from a lyric in the outro of the second single “Taste” and is a reference to the book White Noise by Don DeLillo. The album is their first to rely heavily on pop song structures and abandoned the seven- and eight-minute epics that characterized their first two albums Native Speaker and Flourish // Perish.
