New Yorkers were especially pissed considering the history of beef with the West Coast.

Technically speaking, all Kendrick was doing was using an association with Biggie in place of his actual name (aka metonomy) in order to assert that he is the fusion of both Biggie and 2Pac.

And he was also referencing a Kurupt lyric from “Get Bizy”

Perhaps the only other equally controversial bars were:

I’m Makaveli’s offspring, I’m the king of New York
King of the Coast, one hand, I juggle them both

Causing hysteria in the East, where most rappers called it blasphemy. Given the infamouf East Coats / West Coat beef of the 90’s, this claim hit New Yorkers deep.

Of course, Kendrick is just quoting Kurupt and employing metonymy (like saying “God’s Son” instead of Nas or “Compton’s human sacrifice” instead of Kendrick) to liken himself to the perfect fusion of Biggie and Pac. Understandably that’s a little sensitive for Brooklyners.
