The “Arab Spring” is the sort of colloquial term used to describe the wave of protest and political revolution across much of Northern Africa and the Middle East.

It began initially in Dec 2010 in Tunisia after Mohamed Bouazizi, a fruit seller with no work, self-immolated and political protests followed. From there, varying degrees of political unrest broke out in Egypt (leading to the resignation of President Mubarak), Libya (President Muammar Qaddafi was killed during civil war), Morocco, more recently in Syria, Turkey and beyond.

What this quite literal wave of protest represents is a certain political fervor – people standing up against repressive regimes, unjust conditions and social injustice and demanding more equal rights.
