“Deuces” is a slang term for the peace sign of two fingers raised. “To throw deuces” is to say goodbye and leave a situation, but Chance does an amazing job of showing off its contrast in the next portion.

“Deuce Deuce” is slang for a .22 pistol, which is a symbol of violence. Chance is saying goodbye to all the people he doesn’t like while shooting them with a .22 pistol.

As promised by his father, the Sandman has arrived to take the child to the land of dreams. Neverland, is the fictional home of Peter Pan, that symbolises innocence, untouched childhood and immortality.

At face value, these lyrics are innocuous, however the way Hetfield sings them has a darker tone. This could mean that even though the Sandman is generally known to bring sleep and dreams, there is a source of evil coming from the Sandman or the child.

As the home of Peter Pan is Neverland, “Never Never Land” could mean the nightmare version of Neverland.

“Never Never” may also reference a place where people die. In the poem “Where Dead Men Lie” by Barcroft Boakes this is alluded to in the first stanza:

Out on the wastes of the “Never Never,”
That’s where the dead men lie,
There where the heat-waves dance forever,
That’s where the dead men lie;

The depressive lyrics regarding someone with suicidal desires were inspired by James Hetfield’s first Marshall amplifier, which his mother helped him get before she died, being stolen just before the album was recorded.
