This is a sample from Erykah Badu’s “Didn’t Cha Know”.

This acts as a conscious awakening; realizing there’s work to be done, yet it feels like there isn’t enough time. On top of it all, you’re still constantly learning and growing, rearranging your beliefs as you go along the way. You realize this is probably the journey in itself, reassured that mistakes are a part of the growth.

People in the ghetto are losing their faith in God, because peace never comes, and on Thanksgiving, even though they live in hell, they’re just grateful to be alive.

Pun on his last name and album title – “Cole”, of course, sounds a lot like “cold”

It is also a pun used by J Cole, with the term “Cole World” either referring to J Cole dominating and taking over the hip-hop scene, or that the world is harsh and cruel (as it sounds like cold – hence why he refers to “aint nothing sunny.”) This demonstrates the evil of mankind in the world.

To talk jive is to speak nonsense, usually persuasively to hustle or swindle. I.e. saying anything for a sell. He compares that to him talking like Malcolm X ad M.L.K. who are known for speaking the truth.

Line lifted from Biggie’s “Last Day.” When taken in context with his lines on 2001’s “U Don’t Know,” it may mean he had a million dollars before he even began rapping:

I came into this motherfucker a hundred grand strong
Nine to be exact, from grindin' G-packs

“Hut 1, Hut 2” refers to football, because the “center” huts the ball to the quarter-back on a command like this. He’s the QB, he call the plays and all eyes are on him. “Hut 1, Hut 2” is also referring to military marching, which also makes a reference to the use of the word “attention”, which is a military stance.

He means that he will fuck your problems, you have a lot of problems so he will need a even bigger condom to contain while he fucks your problems. This theme has been in two Kendrick tracks later on in his career: “Backseat Freestyle”:

I pray my dick get big as the Eiffel Tower
So I can fuck the world for seventy two hours

Not to mention his verse on “Fuckin' Problems”:

Girl, I know you want this dick

This song was written by Jhene while reflecting on having an abortion.

She’s saying that she’s destined for greatness but fame wouldn’t be the best thing for her child and she’s torn between living for her dreams or living for her child. Fortunately, she found a happy medium.

Kendrick is exclaiming a debatable statement by saying he is the greatest rapper in the game right now.

Kendrick repeats that he is the ‘Best Rapper Alive’ 3 times then tells Lil' Wayne to swallow his pride because Lil' Wayne is always publicly exclaiming that he is the best rapper alive, not because general consensus deems that he is the best. The genius in this verse is that he repeats it 3 times to demonstrate within the metaphor how often Lil' Wayne had been saying it, then tells him to ‘swallow his pride’ because the claim is innaccurate and conceited and to create a double entendre and big up his own incredible rapping ability.

Even thought times are bad, at least Pac knows there will be better dayz. Praying was difficult for Pac because it resurfaces all the tragedies he remembers when doing so, and the fact that it simply doesn’t work sometimes. Maybe this explains why he had to make his own ghetto gospel.

Even thought 2Pac never claimed a god, he did write a passionate poem about God.
