‘White girl wasted’ is a term created by the stereotype of young white girls either: getting way too drunk, or infamously being lightweights. His girl despises him when he’s intoxicated, because it induces an insatiable sex drive.

J.Cole’s raps usually involve an element of social commentary, and these few lines paint a harsh but accurate picture of the poverty trap. When living in poverty, there will be a lack of opportunity (luck), high stress (no love) and lack of legitimate employment opportunities (no bucks).

Facing these disadvantages and blocked opportunity, J.Cole hints with the following rhetorical question that this may lead to succumbing to the pressure through crime.

So tell me what do a nigga do if he can’t get a job?

The last line shows how terribly real the poverty trap or cycle can be, as a glimmer of hope of a job interview is pretty much pointless if you are unable to find a way to attend it.

‘The race’ is referring to blacks in America. In terms of race and ethnicity, blacks have the highest incarceration rates in the US. There are various theories as to why this is – for example police discrimination, marginalisation and relative deprivation.

The second line could possibly be people [in a better position] wondering why the poor bother breathing (inhale), because they are in hellish surroundings already, they might as-well die.

Alternatively, the line could be a sort of question/answer.
The ‘question’ would be people wondering why the sin of abusing drugs is so prevalent in impoverished areas [which J.Cole refers to as ‘hell’] – In particular, the drugs you ‘inhale’ – so possibly either marijuana or crack cocaine.
The ‘answer’ is that they commit such sins because they feel they are already in hell, so have nothing to fear in the after-life, as hell is all too familiar to them.

A similar themed multi-layered word-play displayed here with ‘inhale/in hell’ has been used previously by J.Cole in 2011’s ‘Before I’m Gone’ with the following line:

Breathing slow man, I’m in hell

And has also been used by friend Kendrick, in the line from H.O.C.:

I’ll let you inhale, like an atheist

And perhaps first used in the underground classic “Below the Heavens” by Blu & Exile

Somebody once told me that I’m already in hell
Freedoms a state a mind
And just the heart of me’s in hell
I free my slave mind so a part of me’s in hell
And when it’s hard to breathe, a part of me inhale

‘She’s getting too cocky’ is a reference to her being in a relationship whilst fucking with Joey, which in this case it would be ‘’two cocky'‘ or alternatively, a girl getting big headed because Joey (who is now in the limelight of the rap game) is showing her a little attention.

Being ‘'in the closet’‘ is slang for the state of being homosexual, but either being suspected and denying it, or living without declaring ones sexual orientation. You won’t spot Joey in a closet however, he’s straight as an arrow.

The ‘Kels and them’ line is a reference to R. Kelly, who did a song series entitled ‘Trapped in the Closet’ [though contrary to the title, it had few homoerotic undertones or story lines]. Kels was in the closet, hiding from the girl’s man with whom he was having an affair with. It is also possibly a reference to various the allegations/rumours about some other artists being gay, and R.Kelly being a closet bisexual – which he disowned his brother over in 2006.

Instead of being in the closet per say, Joey has a closet full of skeletons. Possibly of all the rappers he’s ‘killed’ metaphorically?

The Weeknd may be coming down or just gluttonously seeking some weed. His tone indicates an attempt at reassuring the audience that he’s not doing anything “serious,” and he further rejects concern by noting he doesn’t care about those who are worrying about him.

However, this dismissal is ironic considering there were 10 drugs referenced in this song – adderall, alcohol/liquor, cocaine, marijuana, XO – ecstasy and oxycontin, lean – codeine and promethazine, prescriptions and methamphetamines. Should we not be worried?

Originally, there was fan speculation that this lyric was directed at Drake (and possibly a response to this Drake line), as they were assumed to have fallen out when The Weeknd signed with Universal Records instead of Drake’s label, OVO. However, The Weeknd debunked the rumors that there was ever a beef between the Toronto natives in his Complex interview.

This line which is used to express a lack of self control originally comes from Juicy J (who is referred to in the song throughout), who first used it in ‘Zip and a Double Cup’ and then later made a hook with it on the song ‘Juicy J can’t’.

This girl’s mother really doesn’t like Chance, probably because he sees him as a bad influence for her daughter. Her father would also disapprove of him… if he only knew about him in the first place.

Fathers are notoriously protective over who their daughters date and like to have a say in the kind of partner, so many would prohibit their daughter from dating a guy like Chance. Fortunately for him, her father is so absent from her life that he doesn’t really know the kind of girl she is when she’s out of the house.
