Many have speculated that the name “Clarence White” in this song refers to the bluegrass and country musician of the same name. However, when asked about the origin of the names, Low frontman Alan Sparhawk said they had no real meaning:

Actually the name “Clarence White” came very random when I wrote the song – so not about the actual person. Same with Mr. Murray. The two names had a nice ring together. Sometimes all you need are names.
