Those who are not so intelligent don’t do too well in life, and therefore will often mock those who are grinding to make a better life for themselves to try and make themselves feel better. Unfortunately, stupidity is hereditary.

Society revolves around staying in tune with the popular brands. If it catches on, everyone has to own as many copies of it as possible before a new fad catches on.

This is a topic that has been brought up in rap quite a bit recently, often criticizing individual’s needs to fit in. A great example of this is the song “WWJD He’d Probably LOL Like WTF!!!” by Lupe Fiasco, off of his 2011 mixtape Friend of the People.

Standing in line for the new one
Not the black, but the blue one
And I don’t even know what it do, son
But Steve Jobs said that it’s too fun

The first of a few football references in this song, Shad doesn’t want to throw all of his life away like a Hail Mary pass, where usually out of desperation a quarterback will throw the ball as far as he can to try and hit a runner. He can also be doing the common Hail Mary prayer, asking for help and for guidance from the mother of Jesus, Mary.

This is a metaphor for Shad wondering about his love life, using his own twist on the common idiom often used with relationships, “there are many fish in the sea”. Shad is pondering that there are enough women (fish) in the world to sleep with once and never see again, but wonders if he wants to live his whole life like this.

Lenny Kravitz, one of Shad’s idols and the man who provided the sample for this song, was once married to actress Lisa Bonet, known for her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show. She was the love of Lenny’s life; they were married for 6 years and had one kid, but eventually divorced in 1993.

Shad realizes that he should hold on to those he loves so that he doesn’t lose them like Lenny lost Lisa.

Getting money doesn’t come with safety. When someone blows up on the streets, they instantly become the target of rivals who want to either steal their money or their life. Playing on a physical safe and safety.

XO is trying to rise up into a better man, similar to if you added yeast to bread. Yeast is a key ingredient in bread as it gives it the airy feeling, and causes the bread to actually rise. It can also be a play on rye bread.
