Shyne was incarcerated and served 9 years in prison, from 2000-2009, for a night club shooting incident that left 3 people injured.

At this point in his career 50 was building up his empire and went to visit Shyne in jail to try and get him to join his G-Unit team. Shyne refused the offer and later began talks with Ja Rule, 50’s arch enemy, to sign with Murder Inc. As a result of this Fif dissed Shyne in a radio freestyle. This made its way to Shyne in prison and he responded to this with his own freestyle over the phone.

50 pokes fun at Shyne for talking shit while in protective custody (PC) and states how he could easily pay off one of his connects in prison to kill Shyne and it wouldn’t cost that much.

Charlemagne Tha God (co-host of The Breakfast Club) and Gambino got into an argument about race when Bino visited the show to promote STN MTN / Kauai. After the interview, Charlemagne addressed their debate on his podcast The Brilliant Idiots and Gambino wrote about it on his Deep Web Tour blog

But wait, there’s more: The Breakfast Club talked about this lyric specifically after the mixtape’s release

Gambino says Charlemagnes (plural), not just Charlemagne. He’s generalizing people who throw shade at him–he did this before on his Pound Cake freestyle:

A bunch of DDots wanna talk a lot of shit

Charlemagne further elaborated on the disagreement between the two claiming “there are two white people up for the Grammy this year, Iggy Azalea and Childish Gambino” during an interview in which he denounced Gambino’s nomination for the Grammy for Best Rap Album.

Ferg’s father, Darold Ferguson, died of kidney failure.

Here’s Ferg discussing his father in an interview with Complex

I always shout out my dad. My artistic roots come from him. He had his own T-shirt company and taught me the trade. He knew a lot of the people I run into today, like Puffy. He was in a crew called Same Gang that ran Harlem, like A$AP does now. He died of kidney failure, from breathing in all that plastisol paint. I could be like, “How am I ever going to fill my pop’s shoes?” But in my eyes, I’m becoming better than him, accomplishing things he didn’t get a chance to. He would want that.

This song is about a relationship that may or may not have been supposed to happen. The two appear to be different but are actually quite the same.

Notice the juxtaposition in the title of the phrase being ‘alone together’ so, in fact, the two are not alone.

Pete has been known to mention in concert how no matter how lonely we get, music will always be there for us.

“Alone Together” was released as the band’s third overall single from Save Rock and Roll and was later certified platinum by the RIAA.

Elly Jackson told NME (excerpted on Wikipedia that she wrote these lyrics after the 2011 London riots:

“I’m not making any political points here and I always want to stay away from politics, so that song is about the feeling of the riots—the energy in Brixton at the time—and the fact that I had never seen my generation in London stand up for anything before. Whether it was right or not to riot, or whether anything changed, is not for me to say, but I knew afterwards that I wanted to write a song called ‘Uptight Downtown’.
