Nas' friend was residing at Rikers Island jail complex, but due to the assault mentioned above, he has been moved to Elmira Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison. Nas is saying that there are some nasty dudes there, so his pal needs to keep his head down to avoid any horrific incidents

In the clean version of this song, “niggas” is changed to “lifers” – those who are serving life sentences.

Note the juxtaposition of fire and showers (in the next line).

The dude Born shot last year, which is presumably the act he is serving time for, has been trying to act cool in the ends where he used to rep. One of his old friends bought this charade, and now hangs out with him. Even worse, he gave this dude the Born’s gun! Ultimate deceit.

Again, the incarceration leads to a betrayal on the home front. It comes to light that his former running mate on the streets has teamed up with the dude that he shot–and he’s running around on the corner with the guy’s gun! Et tu, Brute?

The use of “born” as a greeting suggests a tie to the Nation of Gods and Earths, as “born” is a part of their Supreme Alphabet. This is also the start of another letter to different friend who’s locked up.

A reference to the film Weekend At Bernie’s, which follows the escapades of two white collar employees who parade around the corpse of their deceased boss in order to convince people that he’s still alive.

They place sunglasses on his face & prop him up at all times so that nobody realizes he’s dead.

Xzibit was staying true to the game, whilst his peers couldn’t hack it and had to resort to making easy money.

Most likely a shot at Jermaine Dupri who went around in magazines claiming he was the best producer in the industry. His two biggest acts at the time were Kriss Kross and Lil Bow Wow, 3 pre-teen children.

Sway made a couple of very well received mixtapes, This is my Promo, Vol. 1 & 2 before the release of his debut album

There was “hype” around these releases, which is why he’s making fun of himself (“pro” means “professional”, but also “prostitute”)

Sway at his very best on his first album, This Is My Demo. A song riddled with double meanings and clever similes by one of the most lyrically-gifted British rappers. This song was also featured on the soundtrack of the video game Need For Speed: Carbon.

Sway is not literally saying he only drops two rhymes at every show. He is actually elevating his work rate, suggesting the series of shows are quick and regular, this emphasised by the previous verb ‘run’ and the change in pace of rapping.
