Some very nice wordplay from Shad:

The part “I don’t put on airs” serves as a double entendre:

  • Shad is referencing the Nike Air Force One, which is a very important shoe in recent culture, (see “Nikes On My Feet” by Mac Miller). Shad isn’t the stereotypical Nike Air wearing rapper and isn’t woven in the mainstream culture of Hip Hop.
  • Shad is also referencing the idiom “put on airs” as in to act better than you really are or pretend to be good or to be superior.

Shad plays on the word air with the continuation of the line:

I’m conditioned to blow

This line references an air conditioner. But, Shad being “conditioned to blow” refers to how he is determined to become famous in his own way — he doesn’t have to stick to the stereotypes or even try to act better than he is in order become famous.

Michigan is a rather cold state with the highest snowfall of all 50. Shad is from Canada, which is just south/north of Michigan depending on where you’re crossing the border.

Shad never thought that when he starting writing rap that it would become more than a hobby for him and people would enjoy it so much that he is favorite emcee for some people. As he says on Lushlife’s track “Gymnopedie 1.2”:

Growing upwards
I was just another young brother in the suburbs,
I discovered that I love words

He’s just become that good that he now compares himself to legendary rapper Jay Z, while referencing Jay’s second album In My Lifetime Vol. 1.

But YC plans on coming back to his town and help community out, even against people who will disregard his help.

The first line of GNK sets up the rest of the album and the themes that come along with it.

Who ever the line is directed to, YC hope thats he/she will burn in hell, or just die in general. Religiously, it’s a sin to wish that upon someone, but YC hates this person so much that the eternal suffering for himself as well, is worth it.
