Every great magic trick consists of three parts or acts. The first part is called “The Pledge.” The magician shows you something ordinary: a deck of cards, a bird or a man. He shows you this object. Perhaps he asks you to inspect it to see if it is indeed real, unaltered, normal. But of course… it probably isn’t. The second act is called “The Turn”. The magician takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary. Now you’re looking for the secret…but you won’t find it, because of course you’re not really looking. You don’t really want to know. You want to be fooled. But you wouldn’t clap yet. Because making something disappear isn’t enough; you have to bring it back. That’s why every magic trick has a third act, the hardest part, the part we call “The Prestige”.

– Christopher Priest, author of The Prestige

Ever the enigmatic figure, Jay Electronica made Hip Hop heads turn in 2007 when he released his debut project, Act I: The Eternal Sunshine (The Pledge), for free via MySpace.

Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting his second project (and presumed debut album) Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn). While Act II was reportedly finished in 2012, it remains to be officially released. However, Jay did release the acclaimed song “better in tune w the infinite” that begins with an introduction by the late Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation Of Islam.

It follows, then, that Jay’s third Act will be named The Prestige. While little is currently known about Jay’s plans for Act III, Chance is suggesting that Jay may currently be in that mindset. His verse on “How Great” may even be connected to it in some way.

Chance kicks off his verse on “How Great” by rapping:

Magnify, magnify, lift it on high
Spit it Spotify to qualify a spot on His side

When he raps these words, he literally adopts Jay’s flow from the beginning of verse 2 on “Exhibit A”:

They say Candyman, Candyman, spit me a dream
Blow a chunk of the levee out and spit me a stream

In his 2016 interview with Zane Lowe, Chance explained how he intentionally adopted Jay’s flow when he began his verse. He does, after all, consider himself Jay Electronica’s biggest fan (though you can fight him for it).

Specifically, Chance referred to these lyrics from Jay’s single “Exhibit A”:

They say Candyman, Candyman, spit me a dream
Blow a chunk of the levee out and spit me a stream

The song, which runs over 10 minutes, is a melodic journey with Chance delivering rhymes throughout. It’s a multi-layered single with pauses, transitions, and shifts that make it feel like several cuts in one.

The artwork, a captivating view of waves crashing from the seashore, was captured Amy Narodovich.
