Shortly after releasing his 5th studio album Tetsuo & Youth, Lupe announced that he would only do 2 more public interviews before “heading back into the shadows” now that his contract with Atlantic Records is over.

Fortunately, he blessed us with one more freestyle at the end of his interview with Sway (peep the first part of the interview here).

Remember his 2014 freestyle on Sway? It was voted Sway’s freestyle of the year.

If you’re just tuning in to Lupe now, you’re starting at the end of his contract with Atlantic where he’s predicting a “win” for T&Y (as opposed to the industry-influenced “bullshit” of his previous albums Lasers and F&L II). And since Lupe just told us how his contract is going to end, he’s ruined any surprises – hence why he follows this with “spoiler alert.”

The tape that Lupe didn’t rewind is akin to his career. By not rewinding the tape, its ending will be spoiled for the next person.

The double meaning behind these lines is that you can actually listen to T&Y from the end and play the tracks in reverse order. Many believe that the album was purposefully arranged so that you can listen both ways, hence the seasons (e.g. you can start in the Spring and end in the Winter).

The album was absolutely purposefully arranged so there’s a storyline from end to beginning. If you start at the beginning, you’re starting “where we win,” i.e. achieving Nirvana at the end of Mural, these two happy songs Blur My Hands and Dots and Lines right after.

Pedi- is a Latin prefix meaning “foot”.
With your foot on the gas, it’s apparent that you may end up exceeding the speed limit.

“You remind me of my Jeep” is a direct interpolation of lyrics from R. Kelly’s song “You Remind Me Of Something” (the beat of which is also sampled in this song):

You remind me of my Jeep, I wanna ride it
Something like my sound, I wanna pump it
Girl you look just like my cars, I wanna wax it

These bars preface the metaphor of his relationship being like a car crash. While they came out with no scratches (no visible damage) there was underlying trauma that stayed with them.

Jim Crow Laws were the laws made in the South after the Civil War. These laws allowed segregation of things such as water fountains and bathrooms.

“The NEW Jim Crow” means new forms of racism in prison, possibly segregation or other forms of unfair treatment based on race. Ayesha previously commented on the New Jim Crow in her intro to F&L II:

The New Jim Crow caged bird sings
Cause he’s tired of occupying his misery and of our marching
He wanna fly to a higher consciousness
But his school on academic probation
They gave him medicine, diagnosed him with a felony and mental retardation
So he refuses to cease the firin’

The New Jim Crow is also a book by Michelle Alexander that has been said by Cornell West to be the “secular bible for a new social movement in early twenty-first-century America.” It argues that mass incarceration is acting as a re-branding of the Jim Crow laws.

To put it simply, Lupe’s from Chicago and is a fan of spray guns – tools commonly used for spray painting graffiti and/or murals.

Note how the word aficionado, which is derived from Spanish, ties to the Chicano mention in the following line.

An aficionado is someone who is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about something. Lupe is an aficionado of spitting lyrics (spray gun/ efficient spitting).

Lupe contrasts the overweight taster with the feather-weight baker. Unaware of what he’s doing, the baker leaves his mark on people’s environments whenever he works. Perhaps he’s unintentionally killing off the king’s crew by accidentally poisoning the food.

Note the way Lupe blends “meal” at the end of this line to “you” at the start of the next – this is a homophone for milieu (a person’s physical and social setting.)

Continuing the string of bell references, Lupe now alludes to BUD/S training for aspiring Navy SEALs. During “Hell Week”, those wishing to officially quit their training must ring a bell to signify defeat.

This line completes the series of bars alluding to revolution, beginning with the US revolution (symbolised by the Liberty Bell) and progressing to the “personal revolution” one would experience upon completing a challenge so immense as BUD/S training.
