After a break up, some people go through their things and get rid of anything that reminds them of their ex such as gifts, notes, texts, and pictures.
Presumably Slug’s ex did this with all their photos and threw away the halves with him in it. Now he is ‘missing’ from the picture, which is a symbol that they are no longer together.
So now he’s single and looking for another ‘half’ again, to complete his picture.
