When people who practiced self-harm recover from their depression, they’re left with the scars. It’s become common practice recently to cover these scars in tattoos. The photo below is a particularly good (and graphic) example, but it isn’t actually Frank. Frank covered his tattoos in f-holes like you’d see on a mandolin.
One common tattoo is a semicolon. A semicolon represents where the author could have ended the sentence, but didn’t; so tattooing one on your scars represents where you could have ended your life, but didn’t.

Frank confesses to having self harmed as a teenager. He’s since covered the resultant scars with tattoos. In a recent Guardian article, Frank commented on his self-harm.
Like a lot of people, I feel slightly embarrassed by [cutting]—because it’s such a concession of weakness. I don’t have an enormously high opinion of myself. It’s a constant battle not to get too lost in self-criticism, self-loathing.
