A (The Band)

About A (The Band)

A is a pop-punk band formed in 1993 in Suffolk County, England by twins Adam and Jason Perry and their younger brother Giles. Originally named Grand Design, they changed it to A to be the first entry on any alphabetical list of artists. A change of musical direction after a few years got the band noticed and signed by London Records.

A found moderate success in the UK with their first two albums, scoring six minor hits before releasing Hi-Fi Serious in 2002 which spawned the UK top 10 hit “Nothing” – a track that also found some success in Switzerland, Germany and Sweden. It was followed by the UK top 20 “Starbucks”. The following year their standalone single “Good Time” reached #23 in the UK.

In 2004, London Records parent company Time Warner sold their music division off to a group of investors who rebranded as Warner Music. When the band’s 2005 album Teen Dance Ordinance found only moderate success, Warner/London lost interest in the group and band members pursued other ventures.

Jason Perry has since focused on his career as a record producer. Adam “The Yin” Perry and Daniel Carter joined Bloodhound Gang in 2005 and 2009 respectively and performed with them until the band was deported from Russia after their bassist passed a Russian flag across his crotch in 2013. Carter then became a BBC Radio 1 DJ.

The band emerged occasionally to perform at select opportunities between 2007 and 2015, including a Wildhearts tour, a ‘special guest’ spot on Bowling For Soup’s UK tour, and Download 2015. In 2015, the band was reportedly working on new material, but nothing has yet surfaced.

In 2018, A toured with Wheatus and Inme to mark their 25th anniversary as a band by playing Hi Fi Serious in its entirety. The following year they headlined eight dates in the UK, playing A vs Monkey Kong in its entirety.
