About GFRIEND

GFRIEND, also known as 여자친구 (ROM: yeojachingu), was a six-member South Korean girl group formed by Source Music in 2015. The group consisted of Sowon, Yerin, Eunha, Yuju, Sinb and Umji. They are recognized for nostalgic concepts, knife-like choreography, but also vocal oriented songs. With their emotional lyrics, melody and their signature powerful performance, the group has forged their own genre of “Powerful Innocence” and “Passionate Melancholy”.

They made their debut with the EP Season of Glass on January 15, 2015. GFRIEND won several 2015 female rookie awards and garnered momentum despite being from a small company. With the group name having hints of being a best friend to count on, they announced their fandom name to be Buddy.

GFRIEND has become the first K-pop girl group to achieve the 100 million streams milestone with “Me Gustas Tu” according to Gaon chart. GFRIEND received their first music show win on February 2nd, 2016 with “Rough” on The Show. They subsequently won another fourteen awards on music shows including their first triple crowns on M Countdown, Music Bank, Show Champion, and Inkigayo. They have also been recognized by global music award shows, including the MTV European Music Awards.

Their album 回:Labyrinth was the first comeback by GFRIEND since Source Music was acquired by Big Hit Entertainment in July of 2019. Labyrinth was the 1st album apart of the trilogy, summarizing the growth narrative of the group. Labyrinth is the prelude to change before transitioning to show change. The “change” would later be the release of 回: Song of the Sirens. The album saw Umji, Yuju and Eunha taking part in lyrics and composition in several tracks. 回:Walpurgis Night, the final entry in the trilogy, marked the peak of change. On the album, they express themselves as confident and honest modern witches who have finally realized what they want through hardships as it counts with songwriting credits from all members.

Gfriend disbanded on May 22, 2021. All members left the company to persue careers elsewhere after fulfilling their six year contracts.
