About OutKast

Georgia natives Andre “Andre 3000” Benjamin and Antwan “Big Boi” Patton are OutKast, one of the most successful rap groups of all time. Helped by production from the influential collective Organized Noize, Benjamin and Patton popularized and expanded what “Southern rap” sounds like.

The duo first met in high school in 1992 when they were 16, and originally called Two Shades Deep. After being signed in 1994 to LaFace Records , the group decided to change their name to OutKast. Since 2011, Outkast have been signed to Epic Records

Benjamin, the spacey, vegan fashion plate, and Patton, the pimp-alicious gangster, have shown off their chemistry on many successful albums. Many fights have been started amongst rap fans as to whether ATLiens or Aquemini is the superior platter. Aquemini even received a coveted perfect “5 mic” rating from The Source magazine

The group’s biggest commercial success was the double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, where Benjamin and Patton each took half the record. That album featured Benjamin’s inescapable hit “Hey Ya”, but many rap fans felt that Patton’s half was actually the stronger one

After that, the group released an underwhelming movie musical and soundtrack, Idlewild, and it seems that Benjamin has all but given up rapping, except for the occasional (albeit stunning) feature. Patton released one of 2010’s best albums, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.

Outkast reunited at Coachella 2014 and continued to play festivals across the world for the remainder of the summer. It is currently unknown whether Big and Dre will ever release a collaborative piece again.
