About Phil Hartman

Phillip Edward Hartmann (last ‘n’ later removed) (September 24, 1948 – May 28, 1998) was an American comedian, actor, and voice actor. He joined the comedy improv troupe The Groundlings in 1975, and after 11 years there, joined the cast of Saturday Night Live. He was a cast member on SNL for eight years and became known for characters such Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, and impersonations of celebrities such as Donald Trump and Frank Sinatra.

Hartman voiced Troy McClure on The Simpsons, and was starring in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio (1995-1999), which had just wrapped up it’s fourth season shortly before his death, where in the morning of May 28, 1998, he was shot and killed by his own wife, who then killed herself. He was just 49 years old, and she was 42.
