About Surf Curse

Surf Curse is a group consisting of Nick Rattigan and Jacob Rubeck. Surf Curse was formed in Reno, Nevada in 2012, however before they decided on the name of Surf Curse they were called Buffalo 66.

Rubeck and Rattigan first met in eighth grade through a mutual friend, and formed a band during high school (Which Jacob was kicked out of).

Rattigan began drum lessons at age 8. He taught himself guitar because he realized that as a drummer you cannot write and perform songs. Currently Nick has two side projects besides Surf Curse: Televisions which is now called Current Joys, as well as “Devil Worship.”

Jacob Rubeck has two side projects as well: Casino Hearts & Franco Years. He highly dislikes the music scene in Nevada.

Their song ‘The Smell Saved My Life’ on their debut album ‘Buds’ refers to a music venue called The Smell (in Los Angeles) which gave them the attention they were searching for. In 2016 The Smell received a notice from their landlord that they are planning to tear down the venue to put in a parking lot. In 2017, Big Joy records released an album including most of their artists plus a few more called “Save The Smell,” in an effort to raise money to keep The Smell going.

Although they have moved far apart from each other (Nick in Brooklyn, NYC, NY & Jacob in Las Vegas, Nevada), they still get together to play shows during weekends.
