The ability to edit titles and etc. is exclusive to editors and moderators. I think it should be global, I don’t think people will abuse it since people already can edit lyrics.

Thread is so long and I don’t have time to read it so here is my suggestion, sorry if it have already been discussed.

There is a paradox in my mind. Let’s say there’s a thread, an interesting one. I like the topic, I like the title. In general, it would be interesting for me to read some comments on it. So obviously I’m going to vote the thread UP.

Then I read the first comment. It suck so I want to vote it DOWN.

Since the voting for the title and the first comment go together, I cannot vote the topic and then vote the first comment separately. So my suggestion is to split the voting in two.

The title really isn’t as important as the post itself. I don’t see the need for separating them. You decide if you want to up or down the person.

I don’t think we need to go this far. Allowing people to edit the artist/title/album of songs that they have added would be enough. I’ve seen users make a typo in the title and then add a second copy of the song with the title corrected. They should have the ability to fix this themselves.

I agree with this, to an extent.
The reason why I say “to an extent” is because we want to keep all the explanations and comments and hits on one page. It’s a hassle to have to look at two different links to see what explanation works best; it’s harder work for the people trying to explain lyrics… it’s harder work for the readers/listeners of the songs… and it’s harder for the editors and moderators who are trying to improve the site.

To avoid duplicates, typos, and things of that nature, don’t be afraid to use the “Contact Us” button on the top-right corner. The song’s title/information/etc. will be changed and/or looked over relatively soon after you send the email.

We need the ability to offer personal reviews of artists so that we might share our opinions of them with everyone else, on their artist page. They can get a percent rating, or something like that… Although it’ll be terribly difficult to actually rate, it could be helpful to newbies or people looking to check out new artists. Just like lyric explanations, the reviews could be reviewed (kinda redundant, huh?) by eds and mods for content and value, contribution-wise. Then we could be able to easily pick and choose what artists might be up there in listeners' opinions.

I’d like to have some sort of rating system for a song.

Maybe a 5 star system, or a 10/10. Something that involves users voting on how much they actually enjoy the song. Even with people who give it the lowest rating just for the hell of it, I think it would average out.

I think this would help a lot of users when first listening to an artist. They’d be able to see how other people feel about particular songs, and they’d be able to try out some of the higher rated songs first.

I think this could work with albums as well.

Bumpitty-bump.

Here’s my suggestion.

I’ve seen a lot of lyrics set up in a manner like this

[Verse 1: Murs]
I never wear nothing smaller than a 34 jean
Or maybe 32, but at least I keep ‘em clean

[Fashawn]
And I don’t rock nothing bigger than 758 sized fitteds
A fly nigga, word to my regime

[Murs]
I’m devastating, the one that every rapper fears

etc etc etc
Basically, these songs that have more than one artist going back and forth on a verse are HARD AF to pay attention to! There are so many fucking spaces, and it just gets distracting.

I, however, have a solution.

On the Add New Song link, there is a portion at the bottom that speaks on formatting.

Rap Genius takes pride in its hygienic lyrics – please stay in tune with Rap Genius lyric style:
– Lyric format
– Try to make the song look like a poem
– Put the rapper’s name in brackets above his verse, like: [Verse 2: Lil Wayne]
If we are really doing lyric format, wouldn’t it just be better in the circumstances in which there are multiple artists transitioning to just do things like this?

[Verse 1: Murs and Fashawn]
[Murs] I never wear nothing smaller than a 34 jean
Or maybe 32, but at least I keep ‘em clean
[Fashawn] And I don’t rock nothing bigger than 758 sized fitteds
A fly nigga, word to my regime
[M] I’m devastating, the one that every rapper fears
[F] Elevating, floating past the stratosphere
[M] I heard you got a buzz going on for yourself, that’s fucking awesome
[F] Ain’t that the same kid we seen in South by in Austin?
[M] I started out with the
[F] Youngins on the strip
[M] But now all I get his hella money when I spit

yada yada yada, continue that formatting until the hook, then:

[Hook: Krondon]
Come take a trip ‘round my way
A place where weird kids don’t play
Everyday
You see the caution tape when somebody caught a case
And I’m just trying to stay in my lane and beat the papers up
Staying papered up, pape-pape-papered up
Papered up, pape-pape-papered up
Papered up, pape-pape-papered up
I beat them haters up, staying papered up

In my honest opinion, this would work A LOT better, ESPECIALLY if this format was listed under the RapGenius lyric style guidelines. It would be similar to a script for a play

Great idea! I see no problem with this. It looks better, is more fluid, and keeps the flow of the verse alive. I ran into this with New God Flow and the current format just does not stress the back-and-forth enough.

I actually have another recommendation as well as the lyric format.

When a user gets a notification on here, is there any way to make the notification come up more like it would on Facebook or Twitter, where a (1) comes up on the tab? I personally know that sometimes, I get on RapGenius and get on the forum, but venture off onto other sites and then I’ll have to constantly click back for notifications. Wouldn’t it be better if it showed up in the tab where it says “Forum | Rap Genius” or whatnot?

Editors and Moderators need a “Merge Explanations” options. A lot of the time I come onto lyrics that need to be explained as a group but are instead explained separately, either by line by line, or half a line and then the other half of the line explained as two separate explanations. Sometimes one of the separate explanations are really good, but the other parts of the lyrics the explanation needs to include is either unexplained or poorly explained, and Editors and Mods can’t fix that without deleting the explanation and taking that persons IQ.

I figure a “Merge Explanations” option that appears along with the “Explain” button when you hover over lyrics would be really helpful with problems like that.

If we can directly quote people on the forum, instead of typing @insertnamehere or putting quotation marks. And if we can put signature banners.

October 4th, 2012

Forum features are all lined up to come I believe. I’m not sure about signatures though, in general they make a page take more time to load then is needed and clutter the whole page up, text signatures would be a better alternative imo
