Your overall opinion on Earl Sweatshirt

I used to really like his music, but I just recently stopped finding any interest in him because I hate how he sounds. He is so monotone and has no excitement in any songs. I did not like Doris at all, except Chum and Whoa.

What does everyone else think about him??

I bet you a majority of RG agrees with you.

Pre-Doris: most people were loving him, calling him an all-time lyricist I recall in one thread

Post Doris: a lot of people started hating on him for your same exact reasons

And to be honest, I fux with Earl but not Doris also.

I like doris better than Earl. The beats on Earl <<<<<<<<< Doris, of course I’ve never been a huge fan of the style of production Earl used but I felt Doris had more variety and better sounding production than Earl.

earl aint about the flow and the hype he is similar to mf doom and joey , his lines are rich in a poetic sence and people just overlook it alot cuz there use to the: “im a hot and bothered astronaut who is crashin' while jackin off to buffering vids of asher roth eating apple sauce.” But thats his old shit and alot of dudes are sleepin on doris. its a great album , its just a different feel for earl SO LET THAT BOY VIBE in his MF doomy melodramatic monotone way.

Earl sweaty is in my top 5 as of now.

I love earl(tape). Some of the beats on there tyler did a good job with and the others were eh but all in all, earl shined throughout that whole album with songs like earl, luper, kill, couch, etc. It had to be expected that when he got back shit was going to sound different than it was before, he knew that he couldn’t keep talking about raping bitches on the couch and shit always even if that meant losing fans so then came doris.

Doris I fucks with as well but I understand why people don’t though. Partially cause of his monotone voice which i can relate to since when i rap its the same thing kind of, plus his overall sound is different from when he was young which some people didn’t like. the beats on there are more diverse instead of them all being from tyler like before as well.

He is an excellent lyricist though and a complex ass rhymer tbh

@mcdiddle I think @ProFuckingEra was trying to say that he shows signs lyrically and flow-wise comparably to DOOM but yeah, MF DOOM is and will always be much greater.

I definitely like him as he’s my third favorite artist from Odd Future (Behind Frank and Tyler, respectively). I’m usually able to not be affected by his monotone voice because I’ve heard it enough that I accept it as basically commonplace with him (like DOOM’s unique flow), or to better explain, if it bothered me enough I would’ve stopped listening to him awhile ago. Earl has room to grow, and he’s on a label that’s just right for him and won’t try to sabotage his creative control, which is a VERY VERY good situation to be in at his age. I will say this next album will be important in deciding whether he will fulfill some of his potential or not as an artist.

I feel exactly the opposite!

Earl was okay

But Doris is through the roof

I always thought the monotone was his way of sounding tough

TBH Doris was pretty close to best of 2013 for me

What did you see in Doris that made you think that it was best of 2013?

And I know monotone is kind of his thing, but it’s just I would really like to see some sort of excitement in him.

He’s got a chill flow. While it works for me sometimes, I’m just not a fan of the ultra mellowed out flows.

I love Earl. EARL is a personal top 5 OAT. I hated Doris at first, but now I love it too

‘Doris’ is cool, but you can hear the doubt in my voice, that’s why it kinda stayed at a monotone. Just not moving from out that pocket. But now I’m fully comfortable, I can rap like I’m fully comfortable, and that shit is tight!
