No, this is not a thread about RG member Johnny Wang who happens to be an English teacher — this thread is about rappers who teach other rappers rap.

Not just rappers though, rappers which are more famous than the rapper who thought him how to rap, or heavily increased the rapper’s rapping skill.

A perfect example is Jay-Z’s teacher, Big Jaz, Jaz, The Jaz or as he is known now Jaz-O. You guys probably know about their beef, I’m not talking about that in this thread FYI. Jaz has an amazing flow, great lyricism and also produces his own stuff, his overall rap skills are probably even better than Jay’s

People never say something like “Oh, Jaz-O? Oh yeah, he’s a great rapper”, even though they should in my opinion for the three reasons above, or because he was Jay-Z’s rap teacher

Jay-Z is considered a legend among rap fans, even if you disagree, you can’t argue the fact that at least half of the rap heads call him a legend, it doesn’t even matter what you listen to, people who listen to “real” or “fake” Hip-Hop agree, people who listen to underground East Coast rap agree, G-Funk & Bay Area heads agree, Southern heads agree. You know, you can’t argue that shit. But who “gave birth to” this legend? Jaz-O

So, I’m wondering; are there any other rappers who never get shouted out for teaching another rap legend rap?

Some link to his dope stuff; {#1} {#2} {#3} {#4} {#5}

Shout out to Rev Run for mentoring/fathering two GOAT candidates in Diggy and JoJo Simmons.

Speaking of Run DMC, I think Jam Master Jay was one of 50 Cent’s mentors. .

Rakim, my favorite rapper, heavily influenced Nas and plenty of others
Nas refers to how much he was influenced by Eric B and Rakim in his song “Surviving the Times”

Nas heavily influenced Big L

he didn’t teach him but he sure did make him. Dr. Dre and Eminem.

Jay-Z taught memphis bleek to rap.

Jam Master Jay was a pivotal figure in the development of 50 Cent’s style, teaching him the basics of song construction (as opposed to rambling free-styling). Pretty important considering Fif’s reliance on hooks now having him laughing all the way to the bank.

@Grendel that story fascinates the hell out of me. I can’t picture 50 being this TOO-LYRICAL cat that needed to be told the basics in song construction. JMJ must have been a hell of a teacher.

RE: Big L, I think Lord Finesse was a bigger and more direct influence.

KRS-One. You know he’s a techa when a lot of people sample his vocals, cuz all he do is speak knowledge

I still haven’t learned how to dougie.

Dr Dre had a ton of students. Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 cent, the Game etc.

Not necessarily a rap teacher, but No I.D. was Kanye West’s producing mentor.
