Should Jay-Z be forced to retire?
A) He’s got 450M in the bank (just ask SnoopZoggyZogg)
B) To quote the brilliant analysis by DLizzle:
I listened to Blueprint 3 recently and I was thinking that it’s the saddest album ever made. There are three songs dedicated entirely to killing tired trends. [Remember when Jay actually made people stop driving 4.0s? Now he just talks about it, yet people are still using autotune.] There is also a song made entirely to remind people of when he was influential. There is a song about phoning it in because he’s already a legend. The whole thing is depressing to listen to now. I was, and really still am a big Jay-Z fan, but he is getting really old and has nothing to say now..
That picture is amazing
If he keeps spitting about how he’s already a legend, then yes by all means retire.
If he finds new material, I would love to hear some original shit.
Nobody should be forced to retire. Jay will make music until he feels like he isn’t making good stuff anymore. He definitely still has it… it’s not like he’s senile already. I just think he wanted to do something different, like many rappers end up doing. And as much as we all hate it, Blueprint 3 was still a huge commercial success.
Jay just happens to be one of the first rappers to still be relevant when he’s old, probably because he’s one of the few to actually survive that long. It will be interesting to see what other aging rappers will do in the coming years. Even if you’re rich, it’s hard to turn down cash. Also, try to picture Lil Wayne at age 70. It’s fucking hilarious. (I don’t think he’ll live past 40 though).
Busta Rhymes has still got it (sort of… his lyrical content is a little dull, but DAMN he raps fast). He’s only two years younger than Jay.
Yeah, I agree with Nappy. I’m not sure Jay knows exactly what he wants to rap about now because there isn’t exactly any examples of rappers that have stayed relevant into their 40s to compare it against. I mean he built his career off of being from the streets, but he’s gone and left, is insanely successful and is married. I mean it’s not like he’s a political or ‘conscious’ rapper that endlessly has material for him because of the news.
Do people really listen to rap to hear how successful you are now? I mean you could do 1 album after getting your life together, but no one wants to hear more than that. Honestly, he should probably just focus on concept albums for the rest of his career.
That Watch The Throne tracklist is not complete.
Here we (hip-hop headz) spent our life advocating for rap as music to be taken seriously. we get an artist that can still “kick” it centuries later (hyperbole). What is it we want from our artists?
He has managed to take a genre (albeit with massive help) and turn it into a form of art!
Nope! He shouldn’t retire until he becomes subject matter less. for as long as he has an opinion (key word opinion) and can still intelligently put it to a beat!
goes for Dr Dre 2!
These are artists now! Not rappers or hip-hop musicians!
I wouldn’t say no one should be forced to retire, there’s so many people who should be forced to retire from so many things! However, I don’t think Jay Z’s done yet, he has the capacity to really grow and change, and bring something new to the table. If he doesn’t, then he’s out, for sure. Look at a rapper like Slug, he’s been in the underground game for a WHILE, released over 300 different songs, and yet he’s still making quality music. Why? Because he’s grown. His music from this year is so different from his first CDs or even from his music from last year that I still want to listen to it because it is original. If Jay Z can start (and keep) doing that, I’d listen to his 90yr old raps.
Let’s not forget that “American Gangster”, a certifiable classic, came out only about two years prior to BP3. Jesus, people. One lukewarm-to-still-pretty-decent album and you guys wanna write the GOAT off…killing me here.
Hmm, I’ll just drop in two cents. I don’t think anyone should be forced to retire, much less a legend who still has it. Jay-Z is still dropping quotables and is still quite relevant, even at this stage in his career. He’s still inspiring persons and helping to keep Hip-Hop alive. Let’s look back at it, since he’s come back:
- Kingdom Come, good album.
- American Gangster, considered a classic by some.
- Blueprint 3, another good album.
Sure! It isn’t Black Album standard, but it’s still top tier. So let the man live.
Nope. I think Jay’s just as good as he ever was and I still love the stuff he comes out with. Sure, it’s not going to be a Black Album or a Reasonable Doubt but maybe it’s just me, but I liked ‘Blueprint 3’. So what if it’s just about how good he is? As long as he says it in clever ways, it doesn’t bother me.
I’d be pretty gutted if Jay-Z bowed out now, I want to see Blueprint 13.
What do you guys think of my comments about the lyrical content of Blueprint 3?
Sure, if Jay-Z suddenly comes up with some new interesting shit, that would be great, but there’s nothing to suggest that he will.
Another thing I think is funny is that he still idolizes Biggie so much, who was murdered when he was 17 years younger than Jay is now. The subliminal disses were clever in 1996 when they were between 20 year olds, now they are ridiculous. Jay-Z is 41 years old, trying to slip in subtle shots at Baby/Wayne because Baby suggested that Wayne is richer than Jay. Even though public information showed Baby to be incorrect, Jay still had to respond. What kind of 40+ man-child does this?
Someone wrote that Jay helped elevate rap to an art form. This may be partly true, and if it is, many people inside and outside of rap will be looking to him to see what hip-hop music should be. What they are going to see is that it’s about sad old men acting like kids.
Seriously, Jay is still rapping about getting with bitches when he’s married to someone even more famous than himself. Sometimes Jay raps from others' perspectives, so you could argue that, but who’s perspective is he rapping from when he claims to get ladies? A version of himself 15 years younger? Sad.
I should just write an open letter to Jay-Z.
No one should be forced to retire. People just need to face the fact that the rap game is aging a bit. (Eminem, Busta rhymes, Dr. Dre) however I personally do not like jay-z. all of his material is the same and the blueprint 3 was horrible.
