The captain in the poem is an extended metaphor for Abraham Lincoln, who as president is the captain of the ship that is the United States.

The national metaphor continues, describing the Civil War as a “rack,” or storm, that has “weather’d” the ship, but is now over: “fearful trip is done.”

The poem was made famous more recently through the movie Dead Poets Society, in which Mr. Keating’s students call him “Captain” in this climactic scene:

I think this is great.

This fly isn’t beautiful or graceful like, say, a butterfly. It’s “stumbling,” zigzagging back and forth — “uncertain,” perhaps like the speaker’s faith right now.

“Blue” is a weirdly synesthetic word to use here — sounds can’t have colors — but it may suggest the blue-black color of the fly itself, the blueness of the speaker’s mood, or maybe the subdued (as opposed to bright, like red) nature of the buzzing sound.

The fly is a metaphor, personifying the last regrets or thoughts before death, that interrupts the process of dieing peacefully. The last two lines could mean that the last thoughts doesn’t matter; “windows failed” meaning that you just die uncertain, life won’t wait for a easy death.

“Uncertain” could simply mean the fly has nowhere else to go, and it is flying around in the narrators line of sight.

Back to the fly. “Interposed” means it came between two things. In the next stanza we see that it came between the speaker and the light source in the room — but it also seems to “come between” the speaker and a peaceful death.

It also denotes the importance of the fly. The fly interrupts the persona when they are sorting out their will. Something that would almost leave a legacy is disrupted by something as petty and annoying as a fly.

Why a fly? Flies notoriously feed on corpses, so in one sense this may just be a reminder of the ugly reality of death. Flies are also thought of as common, lowly creatures, so the appearance of this one contrasts ironically with the expected presence of “the King” (God) in the room.

The speaker has passed away, and is speaking from some sort of afterlife. He or she has had no problem giving up their possessions in the physical world, and seems very accepting of death. However, there are “portions” of them that they own but that are not “assignable” or transferable to others—their body, their soul.

The Eyes around – had wrung them dry –
And Breaths were gathering firm

There are people in the room with the speaker. They’ve finished crying and are gathering themselves for the speaker’s final moment.

For that last Onset – when the King
Be witnessed – in the Room –

In these days when someone was about to die, it would typically be at home rather than in a hospital; there would be family and a priest at their bedside, and the priest would say a prayer for God to take the soul of the dying. Thus, “when the king Be witnessed — in the Room.”

The speaker of the poem heard a fly in the room when she was on her deathbed. She seems to be telling this anecdote from beyond the grave — like the speakers in a number of Emily Dickinson poems (see e.g. “I died for Beauty — but was scarce”).

"I loafe and invite my soul, / I lean and loafe at my ease..." (Walt Whitman – Song of Myself) | accepted

What Walt is doing is having a flash back of himself before he came to his transcendental realization.
“I loafe and invite me soul"
He was not happy with himself and he invited his soul. think about it if you invite something it is foreign too self.

this is a paradox if soul is self, and self is soul then how could it be invited…
this could be why he feels so terrible, as these emotion arise he is looking that the grass of the summer, it is putting him at ease the “spear of grass” symbolizes the chain of life the spear is at the end and will soon be goon but it paved the way for the base of the grass to soon be the spear

“I took the one less traveled by” most people take the easy way out, so that road has been taken before and most likely talked about. Taking the one less traveled by, would cause more of a affect good or bad.
