Beyond that, my heartbeat is like a drum still
Hip-hop, though seemingly out of the blue to mainstream culture in the eighties, is truly a progression and interpretation of a musical history that goes back for generations. Hip-hop has roots in funk and R&B, which originated from jazz music and blues. Jazz came from the complicated rhythms and lyricism of African-American spirituals, which had roots in the traditional drum circles of Africa.
Thought recognizes that musical DNA and is staying true not only to the music, but his own cultural history. The heartbeat of his music is the African drumming rhythms, and he remains loyal to the struggle of his people.
